CSEwL’s Programs

CSEwL has available the following resources to support community scholarship in three thematic areas: poverty and economic opportunity; environmental sustainability; and/or social practice art among F&M’s faculty:

Curricular Innovation Funds

This award is primarily intended to impact multiple courses and typically involves more than one individual, though we will also consider smaller-scale projects integrating scholarly or educational engagement with Lancaster. Projects may include developing field-based class activities, integrating Lancaster as a case study, working with community partners, a reading group capitalizing on enhancing engagement with the community, departmental discussions of participatory epistemology, and collaborating to team teach a course across two divisions. Departments may use funds to instigate major curricular review that focus on the integration of working with Lancaster into the curriculum.

Enhanced Sabbatical

This opportunity is open to two tenured faculty eager to collaborate with Lancaster stakeholders around complex problems while advancing engaged scholarship projects. Strong preference for these sabbaticals will go to engaged scholars with an established and demonstrated track record for making a difference in the local community and have the support of relevant agencies, non-profits, community groups, and collaborators. Recipients of the fellowship will receive up to 25% of their salary up to $25,000 over the course of the full year (plus benefits); this amount is in addition to the support that they normally get as a faculty member eligible for sabbatical (typically 75% for a full year sabbatical). These fellowships will be awarded competitively to faculty who dedicate their year-long sabbaticals to working in an ongoing and robust way with and for the Lancaster community (city and / or county) on one of the three areas of engaged scholarship.

Seed Grants

Grants can vary from $1000 to $20,000, with an average grant likely at $8000. The opportunity is open to tenured & tenure-track faculty members, long-term (3 years or longer) visiting faculty members (who will be at the College through the academic year subsequent to the grant period), and teaching faculty eager to collaborate with Lancaster-region stakeholders around complex problems while advancing engaged scholarship projects in the three thematic areas.

Student Research Funds

Funding for student research assistance is up to $2,200 per student during the academic year and up to $4,000 per student during the Summer. The opportunity is open to tenured & tenure-track faculty members, long-term (3 years or longer) visiting faculty members (who will be at the College through the following academic year subsequent to the grant period), and teaching faculty eager to collaborate with Lancaster-region stakeholders around complex problems while advancing engaged scholarship projects in the three thematic areas. Participation in the program is open to all current Franklin & Marshall students who  continue classes at F&M in the subsequent semester and to graduating seniors. However, graduating seniors’ engagement in the funded project must end prior to their graduation date, along with the submission of all paperwork related to the grant (payment requests, final report, etc. as requested by CSEwL or F&M Office of Student Employment).
